Empower Reading: Voices in Literacy Mentoring Program
The Empower Reading: Voices in Literacy Mentoring Program is a transformative initiative designed to change the trajectory of K-8th grade students who are below grade level in reading and those with dyslexia or characteristics of dyslexia. Our program uniquely combines the proven science of reading, known as Structured Literacy, with the powerful impact of mentorship to support each child in a holistic way.
At the core of our approach is Structured Literacy, a method grounded in the Science of Reading. This approach focuses on teaching the essential components of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—through personalized 1:1 sessions. By addressing the root causes of reading difficulties, we equip students with the skills they need to become confident, successful readers.
Mentorship is an equally vital element of our program. We pair each child with a mentor who understands the unique challenges of struggling to read or navigating life with dyslexia, the leading reason children struggle to read, impacting up to 20% of the population. Through mentorship, we not only improve literacy skills but also foster social and emotional well-being. Mentors provide encouragement, support, and empathy, helping children build resilience and self-confidence while overcoming their literacy challenges.
The Benefits of Mentoring Include:
- Emotional support from a caring adult or peer
- Improved self-esteem and confidence
- Enhanced social skills and relationship building
- Increased motivation and engagement in learning
- Personalized guidance tailored to each child’s individual needs
